Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University hosted a public lecture by Professor Larissa van den Herik entitled “Reinforcing the Fundamentals of International Criminal Justice: Closing the Gaps around the ICC.”
The event was opened by TSU Deputy Rector Erekle Astakhishvili, and it was attended by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Netherlands to Georgia, Meline Arakelian, Deputy Dean of the TSU Faculty of Law, Giorgi Dgebuadze, representatives of the academic community, and students.
The public lecture was organized in honor of Rudolph Cleveringa, a law professor at Leiden University, in collaboration with the Faculty of Law at TSU, Leiden University, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. On November 26, 1940, Professor Cleveringa, Dean of the Faculty of Law, delivered a public address in which he denounced the dismissal of Jewish professors, particularly that of his colleague, Meyers, by the Nazi occupying forces. He was subsequently arrested for this reason. His speech resulted in a student strike. The university was closed by the Nazis and remained closed throughout the duration of the war. In commemoration of this event, the Leiden University Foundation sponsors Cleveringa Lectures on an annual basis in numerous locations worldwide.
It is noteworthy that in 2023, the Faculty of Law held the Cleveringa lecture in collaboration with Leiden University and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The event was dedicated to the discussion of personal data protection issues, with a particular focus on the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the prospects of its implementation in practice.
